Information You Provide
A name, phone number, or address entered in a search form is sent to the outside provider that supplies the results. Our servers do not retain a copy of those searches. When you contact us, we receive the content of your message and use it to respond.
Automatic Technical Data
Our host may keep normal server-log information, such as IP address, browser type, pages requested, and timestamps. We review this in aggregate for security, maintenance, and readership trends. Cookies or comparable tools may support basic analytics and advertising measurement where used.
What We Do With This Data
We use this limited information to operate the reference, address technical issues, understand aggregate traffic, and improve the material. We do not sell visitor lists or create profiles of individual readers.
External Links
Links lead to county and state portals, library collections, archives, and outside search providers. Their policies govern information you send to them, including information submitted through sponsored-result tools. Review those policies before using an outside service.
Who Can Process Data
Hosting and support providers process server logs on our behalf. Analytics or advertising partners may receive the automatic information described above. We share data when valid legal process requires disclosure and otherwise only as stated here.
How We Protect Your Data
The service uses an encrypted connection, and logs are retained only for the operational purposes described above. There are no visitor accounts, so the site does not maintain a visitor password or profile.
Visitors Under 18
This reference is intended for adults and is not directed to children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. Contact us if you believe a minor has sent us information so it can be removed.
Your Information Choices
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to request access to, correction of, or deletion of personal information a service keeps. North Carolina materials reviewed did not identify an enacted comprehensive data-broker deletion law; the state’s 2025 Personal Privacy Protection Act has a narrower nonprofit-information scope. Because we keep very little, a request usually involves checking the contact mailbox and available logs. Use the Contact page. Public records held by North Carolina, Orange County, or Chapel Hill custodians must be addressed to that custodian.
Policy Updates
Changes to this policy will appear here. Continued use after an update means you accept the revised policy.
